Lawrence Joseph Sanchez Sr., a welder and pipe fitter and founder of Local 102, passed away Monday, March 28, 2011, at Plaquemine Caring Nursing Home. He was 88, a resident of Addis and a native of White Castle. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and recipient of the Purple Heart. He served as a cannoneer 844 in the 5th Armored Division in its campaigns in the Northern France, the Ardennes, Central Europe, and the Rhineland. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Addis. Visiting at Wilbert Funeral Home, Plaquemine, on Wednesday, March 30, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday, March 31, from 10 a.m. until Rite of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Interment in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church Cemetery, White Castle. He was the husband of the late Virginia Chambless Sanchez, father of the late Lawrence J. Sanchez Jr., father-in-law of Doris Griffin Sanchez, father of Linda S. Favron, father-in-law of the late Oniel J. Favron Jr., grandfather of Lawrence III, Ryan, Robert, Mark, Barry, Billy, Oniel and Darnell, great-grandfather of Baret, Brant, Hunter, James, Kristen, Ryan, Shane, Kimberly, Destiny, Addison, Christian, Morgan, Lexi, Richard, Brittany and Riana, and brother of Louis and Kenneth Sanchez, Milda Richbourg, Elnora Daigle and Hilda Delapasse. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Preceded in death by his parents, Albert "T-Bear" and Alice Raffray Sanchez; sisters, Delta Thomas, Vera Smith, Mildred Durring and Vernese Longo; and brothers, Herby, Shelby, Irvin, Harry, Dudley, Clifton and Chilton Sanchez. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was loved dearly and will be missed by many.
